Lecce origins date back to the Messapii. During the II century, the Roman emperor Hadrian built a theatre and an amphitheatre whose remains can still be seen in piazza Sant'Oronzo. From the XVI and the XVIII century Lecce saw the development of the so called 'Lecce Baroque' with the construction of various monuments of great artistic worth. Near Lecce you’ll find some beautiful sandy beaches.Polignano a Mare
Polignano a mare is a town of Greek origins. It is located on a deep gorge overlooking the Adriatic sea on a steep rocky cliff of karst nature. Because of this, there is a number of caves on the sea that were inhabited by the prehistoric men. Of these, marine caves the Palazzese grotta, is the most enchanting one and should be seen. The historic centre of Poligano is well preserved. Its network of alleyways winding among the typical white houses and small courtyards, lead to terraces with amazing views over the Adriatic sea.Matera
Matera is much appreciated and renowned for its Sassi district; the ancient heart of thecity. The Sassi surround the Civita and constitute a city unto itself, completely carved out of the face of the calcareous rock. The Sassi district is a system made of dwellings carved out of the steep slopes of a deep valley with surprising and unusual features called the ‘Gravina’. Elegant and multi-faceted buildings are interspersed with underground mazes and cave labyrinths, forming one single stunning landscape.Caves of Castellana
The Caves of Catellana are amongst the most important and beautiful in Italy. A series of cavities coated in a myriad of concretions of the most amazing shapes and colors: stalactites hanging like crystallized dew drops, and stalagmites, formations rising up from below like corkscrews. Some sections even resemble marble columns. Small and gigantic sculptures that seem the work of great sculptors, or of meticulous jewelers and engravers. Instead, this is the work of nature.Castel del Monte
Found on the high ground of the Murge plateau, Castel del Monte is protected by UNESCO since 1996. It appears as part of an ideally balanced scene between symbolism, architecture and nature. It is a perfect octagon, symmetrical, and you can admire it from almost any angle, and features panoramic views looking down from its high white towers on a landscape of rocks and olive trees. Castel del Monte is one of the most spectacular Puglia castles and was erected by Frederick II to defend the area. It has the look of a fortress: alone, high and imposing on the top of the hill.accomodation & events
