Historic Trains Are Coming to Puglia and Basilicata

Travel is about much more than getting from one place to another—it’s about discovering the history, culture, and traditions that make each destination unique. And what better way to do that than aboard a historic train?

Soon, vintage trains will once again travel along the Basilicata section of the Gioia del Colle–Rocchetta Sant’Antonio railway, offering visitors a unique journey through breathtaking landscapes and charming historic stations.

A Journey Through History and Nature

Promoted by the Basilicata Regional Government, this initiative aims to showcase the region through slow tourism, inviting travelers to rediscover the charm of Italy’s historic secondary railway lines.

The project will bring beautifully restored heritage trains back to a railway that winds through picturesque villages and stunning countryside, turning every journey into an immersive experience where history and nature come together.

Scheduled stops include the stations of Palazzo San Gervasio, Venosa, and Rapolla—hidden gems nestled in the Basilicata landscape. These small towns provide a gateway to the region’s authentic character, where rolling hills, vineyards, and centuries-old villages reveal a side of Basilicata that remains largely untouched by mass tourism.

Step Back in Time

Beyond offering spectacular scenery, the initiative also aims to restore and revitalize the historic railway stations, transforming them into vibrant cultural spaces that preserve the memories of an era when these tracks connected communities, transported goods, and played a vital role in everyday life.

Today, those same railways are being reimagined as gateways to experiential tourism, allowing visitors to experience the region from a completely different perspective.

The project also includes historical reenactments and cultural events organized by local municipalities and associations, making each journey an opportunity to relive the past while discovering the traditions that continue to shape the region today.

If you love slow travel, have a passion for historic railways, or simply want to discover the most authentic side of Basilicata, this experience is not to be missed.

Climb aboard and travel through history, surrounded by spectacular landscapes and timeless railway stations. Here, the journey is much more than transportation—it’s an unforgettable part of the destination itself.
